Insights to Action Flipping the script Men as partners in advancing gender equity
What role can men and boys play in the age of #MeToo and #TimesUp? Meaningful engagement is critical to achieving gender equality and equity. Their involvement is necessary not only for women’s empowerment, but also for transforming the social and gender norms that reinforce patriarchy and inequality, which ultimately harm both women and men.
The primary challenge embedded in this work is how to engage men and boys effectively without instrumentalizing them as a pathway to women’s empowerment on the one hand, or marginalizing women and girls in gender equity work on the other. Reducing violence, improving health outcomes and creating hospitable workplaces involves engaging men and boys and women and girls to transform gendered social norms and create a more equitable distribution of power.
